First, there were VoIP services like Skype, which then evolved to video conference-like calls like Hangouts on mobile, and then there’s U Mobile’s latest WiFi Calling.

First of all, I’d like to compare U Mobile’s WiFi Calling with something that was developed quite some time ago called VoLTE, or Voice Over LTE. It functions the same as VoIP – whenever you have LTE on your smartphone, you call to the other person over LTE instead of using what we have currently. With the higher bandwidth and lower ping of LTE, calls can be connected instantly with superb call quality. However, VoLTE means you need to be connected to LTE to make that call, and is still in its preliminary stages of rolling out, and still has a tonne of testing to do.

U Mobile however used another brilliant idea – why not call over WiFi instead? Introducing their WiFi Calling feature.

It’s a brilliant mix between VoLTE and  VoIP, where the calls can be made for free locally, or globally with IDD rates applied whenever you’re connected over WiFi. All you need to be eligible to use WiFi Calling is to be on U Mobile’s network, and your recipient’s phone number. Somehow U Mobile worked out their magic to have WiFi Calling functioning without an additional app, and even when there is absolutely no coverage, but there’s WiFi.

This seamless integration will only make life easier for places with little to no network coverage – let’s say a bran new shopping mall for example, or some isolated place like the resort at the mountain top.

Personally speaking, I really like WiFi Calling feature by U Mobile. Now to obtain a U Mobile number…
