We’ve seen the announcement of Google’s brand new smarthome platform called the Google Home and Google’s new Assistant. It seems like there’s no such thing as a coincidence, as Samsung closed the deal with Viv Labs on the same week of Google’s announcement.

Viv Labs, in summary, is a company that is defined as “the intelligent interface to everything”. It has a unique open-sourced artificial intelligence platform for third-party developers to build natural language-based interface conversational assistants into renowned applications and services. We all know how great Google’s voice assistant is when it comes to natural language, so I really wonder how Viv Labs is going to compare to Google’s. For now, we have no exact figure on how much Viv Labs had been acquired for.

From what we’ve seen, Samsung does have their own voice assistant called the S Voice. It’s rarely used, and I wonder why Samsung even bother developing that – but now we know. It seems like with S Voice’s platform, the acquisition of Viv Labs means Samsung can expand upon this platform. Maybe Samsung would integrate all of these into their home electronics too – like their fridge and air conditioners. It’s an interesting time for AI developments with these big tech companies stepping up their game.
