If you did keep up with the news churning around Facebook with first its announcement of the new design for the entire page, Android and iOS app, then came along the Facebook Home and its new Messenger app with the chat heads. Not long after that, there are actually stickers included with the current version of Messenger on Android.
Eventually news came out that Facebook is testing free phone calling services over the Internet (VoIP) just like Skype, Viber, LINE or whatever it is that you use in the U.S.. Little did we know… it’s actually available in Malaysia too.
How did I find out though? Well, here’s the entire list of instructions how did I actually called someone using Facebook Messenger.
- Download Facebook Messenger
- Log in to your Facebook Account
- Tap on the contact you want to call
- Tap the “i” button at the top-right corner
- Tap the Free Call button!
NOTE : It only works if your recipient has the latest version of Messenger on Android or iOS (I never get to try with other platforms). If your recipient doesn’t have a compatible version, the Free Call button will be greyed out.
Great isn’t it?! Finally you can start to trim down on apps – again. The phone calls actually show enlarges your entire profile picture to be shown as the background instead of having a small picture with an empty background. As for compatibility, I tested with an LG Nexus 4, a Samsung Galaxy Nexus & Note II, HTC Butterfly and also an Apple iPhone 4.The call quality is superb, and I can bet that you will come back to use this feature again. It might take a while before it starts ringing, and just like normal phone call, it will automatically drop after 30 seconds. One special thing about this Facebook Free Call though, is that the volume is exceptionally crisp and loud when I tested with an LG Nexus 4 and a Samsung Galaxy Note II.
