Apple’s WWDC 2023 keynote is a heck of a blast that introduced so many things but in this post, we’ll cover the hardware section first.
M2 Ultra
First thing first, the new Apple Silicon King – the M2 Ultra. Utilizing UltraFusion tech to combine two M2 Max dies, the M2 Ultra hosts a total of 134 billion transistors and is capable of providing support for 192GB of RAM and 800GB/s bandwidth.
The 24-core CPU, up to 76-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine performance have also gained much-needed improvement where the numbers are landing at +20%, +30%, and +40%.
Media engine-wise, it is twice the capability of the M2 Max which at best, 22 video streams of 8K ProRes 422 are not a problem, and don’t get me started on the up to 6x Pro Display XDR display output, and the latest Secure Enclave for best-to-date security.
MacBook Air with a number 15
At last, the MacBook Air has a new size and it is going to be 15 inches. Equipped with a 15.3-inch Liquid Retina Display, it is light and thin at just 1.51kg and 11.5mm offering portability and performance with an M2 chip running an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine config with 24GB of unified memory.
The FaceTime HD camera at 1080p provides perfect face capture during FaceTime calls and other video conferences while the 3-mic array captures voice clearly through its advanced beamforming algorithms.
The device can also produce some great audio via the internal 6-speaker sound system comprising of 2x tweeters and 2 sets of force-calling woofers offering super deep bass and spatial audio with Dolby Atmos for immersion without a pair of headphones.
Also, users can also find the MagSafe charging port, 2x Thunderbolt for displays and peripherals, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
This model will be sold in Malaysia at the price of RM6,199 (RM5,729 for education) in the near future with colors of Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Space Grey.
M2 Party for the Studio and Pro
Now for the real professional hardware with blessings going towards the Mac Studio getting both the M2 Max and M2 Ultra with the forme offering M2 Max as much as 12-core GPU and 38-core GPU together with 96GB unified memory to deliver improvements such as 50% higher rendering speeds in After Effects and 25% faster app building in Xcode.
On the other hand, the Mac Pro with M2 Ultra will perform at best if configured according to the one mentioned above and quoting internal benchmarks, Octane renders are capable of completing 3 times faster while DaVinci Resolve sees a 50% uplift in video processing.
Another advantage provided by Mac Pro is the entrance of Apple Silicon into the lineup enhances PCIe capability since it now has 8x Thunderbolt 4, 3x USB-A, 2x HDMI, 2x 10GbE, and as a side note, a headphone jack with a decent DAC capable of driving high-impedance headphones.
The pricing for these new Mac Studio and Mac Pro are as follows:
- Mac Studio – From RM9,499 (RM8,549 for education)
- Mac Pro (Tower Enclosure) – From RM32,999 (RM31,109 for education)
- Mac Pro (Rack Enclosure) – From RM34,999 (RM32,669 for education)
