In the world of physics, we’ve been looking for the one material that has all – or at least the closest – to the ideal properties that we want on a material. Graphene came to be the wonder material that we’ve been looking for, and here’s a video describing what graphene actually is, and why is it dubbed the wonder material.

Graphene however has a problem when it came to mass productions. The wonder material is already in the works of being integrated into all sorts of uses – ranging from electronics, aircrafts, vehicles,
To be frank, graphene is based on the relatively new field of nanotechnology- which is still at its infancy stage. Research and development are still heavily ongoing on its applications, physical and chemical properties, etc., especially in the electronics market as graphene will allow flexible screens a la the video below.
Samsung’s way of mass-producing graphene takes on a few rather simple tasks, and it is credited to the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).
- Start off with a normal wilicon wafer
- Coat a layer of germanium on top
- Dip the entire wafer into diluted hydrofluoric acid; forming germanium oxides and a layer of hydrogen atoms on the topside of the wafer
- Put the wafer into a furnace; a layer of graphene will be deposited on the hydrogen atoms on the wafer
- Cool in vacuum
- Peel off the layer of graphene
It seems relatively simple and SAIT didn’t publish any details like the time taken to create a layer and also what’s the maximum size that it can be done at once.
Albeit the lack of information, it’s still amazing to see that there’s finally a method to mass-produce graphene. It won’t be long anymore till the time when we can see touch-screen windows and also super tough glasses everywhere.
Who knows, maybe the Nokia Morph that I’ve mentioned a few times will finally be true?
