We have a very special opportunity to sit with the Director of Technical Marketing in MediaTek, Armstrong Chen, in a roundtable to talk about MediaTek regarding its relationship with the OEM partners, the present-day MediaTek products, and also the future. We prepared a bunch of different questions, and here are all the things that we asked.

We are going to paraphrase some parts of the answer for the sake of brevity.

How’s the collaboration between OPPO and MediaTek benefit each other?

OPPO is a great partner for MediaTek as it allows MediaTek to collect customer feedback and build new chips revolving around the feedback. While the flagship chipsets are going to get the latest and greatest technologies, it will trickle down to the lower tiers of chipsets in due time.

For example, OPPO users are focusing on performance and gaming. MediaTek’s HyperEngine technology was introduced a while back to the flagship chipsets. Now, the Dimensity 6300 found in the OPPO A6 Pro is also equipped with the HyperEngine technology to allow better sustained gaming capability.

Network is also a crucial part of mobile gaming, as a consistent internet connection is needed for the lowest possible ping.

What unique aspects does MediaTek offer to OEMs?

MediaTek provides a solid foundation for the OEMs to build upon and fine-tune to cater to the specific devices. We’ve already seen this in many Ultra variations of the chips that are technically the same as the base version, but it has been fine-tuned to cater to that phone – hence the Ultra moniker.

MediaTek’s expansion

One thing that we were informed is how MediaTek is going to expand its presence in other regions around the globe. Currently, most devices equipped with MediaTek chipsets are only found within Asia, with some exceptions like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 and Tab S11 series.

By expanding into other regions of the world, MediaTek will have a better understanding of user demands from other regions of the world to create chips that can cater to everyone.

Game optimizations

MediaTek is also constantly working with game developers to have their games work properly with MediaTek chipsets. This is great to see as we’ve already done multiple gaming tests for devices with MediaTek chipsets and the performance was exceptional.

With more and more graphically-demanding games in the Google Play Store, it’s great to see chipsets are getting the optimizations it need to ensure a smooth experience on the release day.
