There’s a wave of random reboots and Blue Screen of Death people have been seeing on their Windows-powered PCs recently, and through the gathering of several reports, it has been found that it happens exclusively to Dell systems. And not for long, Dell actually confirmed that its SupportAssist stack is causing just that.

Microsoft ain't the one to blame - Dell confirms SupportAssist bug triggers BSOD 1

The remediation service layer of SupportAssist is to blame, as version 5.5.16.0 is giving a “0xEF_DellSupportAss_BUGCHECK_CRITICAL_PROCESS” stop error, and it is serious enough to bring the entire OS down with it. While the bug is “simple” enough for Dell engineers to reproduce and identify, the current effective mitigation is to either disable the SupportAssist Remediation service or fully uninstall it.

To do that, head over to Settings -> Installed Apps, then search for the SupportAssist Remediation package to uninstall it (Either branded as Dell or Alienware, depending on your system). But if worse comes to worst – your system is still getting BSODs, then please get through Dell support as soon as possible.

Dell’s track record regarding SupportAssist-related issues isn’t breaking news – 2025 saw a similar bug that bugged out Latitude and Vostro machines, while earlier cases involving BIOS updates directly broke boot sequences. Heck, even past researchers have flagged BIOSConnect within SupportAssist as an attack surface capable of remote code execution at the firmware level.
