Open a weather app, check the news, scroll through a shopping site for five minutes. In that short window, dozens of companies you have never heard of may have recorded what you looked at, how long you lingered, and what device you used to do it. Most people sense this is happening, but few understand the mechanics behind it.

That gap matters. Once you know how tracking actually works, the ads that follow you around stop feeling like magic, and the steps to limit them stop feeling pointless. This article breaks down what data tracking is, how it operates on websites and in mobile apps, where your information ends up, and what you can realistically do about it.

What Data Tracking Actually Means

Data tracking is the practice of collecting and recording information about what people do online. It covers the pages you visit, the products you view, the buttons you tap, your location, your device details, and in many cases your behavior across completely unrelated sites and apps.

Some of this collection is harmless and even useful. A site needs to remember what is in your shopping cart, and an app needs to know your rough location to show local weather. The part that raises eyebrows is cross-context tracking: when a company observes your activity across many different websites and apps, then stitches those observations into a single profile tied to you or your device.

That profile is the product. It powers targeted advertising, content recommendations, dynamic pricing experiments, and analytics dashboards. The companies doing the heaviest tracking are usually not the sites you visit but the advertising and analytics firms operating quietly in the background.

How Websites Track You

The classic tool of web tracking is the cookie, a small text file a site stores in your browser. First-party cookies come from the site you are actually visiting and handle practical jobs like keeping you logged in. Third-party cookies come from other domains embedded in the page, typically ad networks, and they can recognize you again on any other site that loads code from the same network. That is how a pair of shoes you viewed once can trail you across the internet for weeks.

The status of third-party cookies has shifted in recent years. Safari and Firefox have blocked them by default for a long time, and Google ultimately dropped its plan to remove them from Chrome entirely, opting instead to let users manage them through the browser’s privacy settings while it continues developing its Privacy Sandbox advertising tools. So in 2026, third-party cookies still exist, but they reach a shrinking share of the web.

Trackers have adapted with techniques that do not rely on cookies at all:

  • Tracking pixels: tiny invisible images or snippets of code embedded in pages and emails. When they load, they report back that you opened the page or message, along with your IP address and device details.
  • Browser fingerprinting: combining traits like your screen resolution, installed fonts, time zone, language, and graphics hardware into a signature that can identify your browser even with cookies cleared.
  • Session replay scripts: tools that record mouse movements, scrolling, and keystrokes on a page, letting companies replay your visit almost like a video.

Your IP address adds another layer, since it reveals your approximate location and stays fairly consistent, giving trackers a convenient thread to connect your activity over time. URL parameters do similar work in plain sight. Those long strings of characters after a link you clicked in an email or social post tell the destination site exactly where you came from and which campaign reached you.

How Mobile Apps Track You

Apps track differently than websites, and in some ways more aggressively, because an app runs as installed software with access to device-level information a browser never sees.

The workhorse of app tracking is the software development kit, or SDK. Developers rarely build analytics, crash reporting, or advertising features from scratch. Instead, they drop in ready-made SDKs from companies like Google, Meta, and a long list of smaller ad tech firms. Each SDK is third-party code running inside the app, and many of them transmit data back to their makers: which screens you open, what you tap, how long sessions last, and what device you carry. A single free app can contain a dozen of these kits, which is a big part of how free apps make money.

Then there is the advertising identifier, a unique ID built into your phone’s operating system. Apple calls it the IDFA and Google calls it the GAID. Any app on your device can read the same identifier, which lets ad companies link your activity in a fitness app with your activity in a game and a news app, building one continuous picture of you.

This is where the platforms have intervened. Since 2021, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency framework has forced iOS apps to ask permission before tracking you across other companies’ apps and websites, and most people tap no. Google has taken a slower route on Android, letting users delete their advertising ID while developing its own Privacy Sandbox alternatives for apps. These changes have reduced ID-based tracking, but they have not ended it. Many companies now lean on server-side methods and probabilistic matching, which infer that two sessions belong to the same person based on signals like IP address, device model, and timing.

App permissions round out the picture. Location access is the most sensitive example. A flashlight app has no business knowing where you are, yet location data harvested through SDKs has repeatedly ended up for sale through data brokers.

Where Your Data Ends Up

Tracking data rarely stays with the company that collected it. It flows into a market.

Ad networks use it to decide, in the milliseconds before a page loads, which advertiser wins the auction to show you something. Analytics firms aggregate it to sell insights about audience behavior. Data brokers buy, combine, and resell it, packaging profiles that can include your estimated income, health interests, political leanings, and daily movement patterns. Few people ever interact with these brokers directly, which is exactly why the industry attracts so little attention relative to its size.

Regulation has put some guardrails around all of this. Europe’s GDPR requires a legal basis for processing personal data and is the reason cookie consent banners exist. In the United States, a growing patchwork of state privacy laws, starting with California’s, gives residents rights to opt out of the sale and sharing of their data. These laws help, but enforcement is uneven and the burden still falls largely on individuals to exercise their rights.

How to Limit Tracking Without Going Off the Grid

You cannot eliminate tracking entirely while living a normal digital life, but you can cut it down dramatically with a handful of habits. Start in your browser by blocking third-party cookies, and consider a browser or extension that blocks trackers outright. On your phone, audit app permissions every few months, deny tracking prompts on iOS, and reset or delete your advertising ID in your Android or Apple settings.

Your network connection deserves attention too, because your IP address follows you across every site and app you use. This is where people often ask what’s a VPN and whether it actually helps. Sign out of accounts you are not using, skip the convenience of logging into sites with your Google or Facebook account, and be stingy with your email address, since it has become one of the most common identifiers for matching profiles across services.
