Google just did their yearly spring cleaning to see which of their services is to be terminated and one of them – drum rolls please – is Google Reader. First released on October 2005 and now has a deadline (literally). The service is to be discontinued on the 1st of July 2013. Definitely not a TGIF everyone is looking for.

Google Reader being a famously used as an RSS feeder (obviously) offers great integration to Google’s services like Blogger, podcasts and more. Since Google has already settled down on killing Google Reader, Feedly is getting “over half a million Google Reader users” since the announcement.

Reason why is simple – they offer a simple button to “Connect to Google Reader”. Instant user data migration!

Feedly user number spike, thanks to Google Reader 3

As many other alternatives are there, Feedly obviously got most of the users from Google Reader, but there is also a petition to bring Google Reader back. Obviously people have been using Google Reader and is already tailored to its interface and usage.
