December 2014 – Huawei’s Honor announces the 6 Plus, with impressive specs all over. Made many jaws drop and dripping drool, including me myself. Months passed, many other phones came by. So… what about now?
It’s been long since the Honor 6 Plus has been launched – a little over 9 months actually, and that was the time when the OnePlus One was the hottest in the market. Those months past, so what did Huawei’s Honor did to their 6 Plus?
Though why does it give me a very different vibe compared to the OnePlus One? Digging deeper reveals something very important – the Android version it is running on. If you haven’t already know, the Honor 6 Plus still runs on Android 4.4.2 – not even the last version of KitKat.
Though I would say that its camera is something different – at least during its time of release. Of course I’m talking about the dual rear-facing cameras. It is able to do what the HTC One M8’s Duos camera, and I would say it’s a very nice feature to have, not a must to survive.
There is one thing that I wish more smartphone manufacturers to do, especially when it doesn’t have micro SD expansion anymore – that is to make it dual SIM, and have the second SIM to double as a micro SD card slot.
It might seem unfair to dual-SIM users, but hey – that amount of benefit though.
The performance isn’t exactly there either, not sure what happened on the phone itself but Epic Citadel showed it scored only an average of 34.4 FPS – not once, but on two different runs. What about my other usual benchmarking?
Ah, Vellamo. Not everyone understands these jargonistic bombastic numbers shown here, but here’s the rundown – compared to the OnePlus One, Chrome runs better on the Honor 6 Plus but in terms of raw performance, the One takes the trophy.
I even have the answer to the question of why too.
Software optimization. If Huawei continues to update and improve the Honor 6 Plus, I’m sure it’ll be great. On paper, the hardware packs serious power – but somehow neglected by Honor and the software ruined the entire experience.
The last thing I found about its software is about its Android 5 Lollipop update. I didn’t say it’s the Android 5.0 update, because they seem to be skipping directly to Android 5.1.1. Great – so when can I get it?
Answer is you can’t – at least not yet. They’re still in beta as of today. With Android 6.0 Marshmallow dropping soon – expectedly end of this month, I’d expect Honor to at least update their once-a-flagship smartphone to Android 5.0 within 6 months.
Or maybe Honor has given up on the Honor 6 Plus and is not giving minimal effort to support the Honor 6 Plus, I’m not sure. FFS, even Stagefright isn’t patched yet.
