Welcome AMD’s XConnect, their very own technology for external GPU solution that is partnered with a few other major driving forces, namely Intel and Razer.
With the help of Intel’s Thunderbolt 3 technology, ultrabooks can now game on an external GPU by connecting just a single Thunderbol 3 port into it.
What’s shown here is a Razer Blade Stealth ultrabook. It’s small, very light, and impossibly thin. That however comes with a sacrifice in its graphics performance, and thus never making it a viable option to game on it. It comes with 4 USB ports, double DVI, one HDMI, and a DisplayPort.
Supported Radeon GPUs that support AMD XConnect:
- Radeon™ R9 Fury
- Radeon™ R9 Nano
- All Radeon™ R9 300 Series
- Radeon™ R9 290X
- Radeon™ R9 290
- Radeon™ R9 285
- Any other Radeon GPUs up to 375W
My one question for this feature however is why didn’t it come out earlier? I used to have 4 separate USB devices connected to my laptop, another HDMI port for my 21:9 goodness and another Ethernet jack for Gigabit network speeds. With this enclosure, I can literally hook up everything to the enclosure itself, and have that one little Thunderbolt 3 cable connected to my laptop. So much easier to hook up and disconnect.
Are you excited for the future of desktop-grade GPUs on a laptop? I know I am!
