The battle between SSDs and HDDs continue – but now, Western Digital will make things more favorable for SSDs. With the introduction of their world’s first 512Gb 64-layer 3D NAND chip, it’s going to create higher density storage solutions for SSDs.

Let’s break down what it means here. 512Gb 64-layer 3D NAND chip is full of jargon, so we’ll try to explain in two parts.

512Gb here means that a single chip will have 512 gigabits – which translates to 64 gigabytes. 1 byte = 8 bits.
64 layers here means that layers of memory cells are stacked instead of occupying more footprint, making it denser across a single area. Keep in mind that these memory cells aren’t thick at all, but once they’re laid out in an array, they can occupy a humongous area.
This stacked layers of memory are also known as 3D NAND chip.

Irrelevant image, but I thought I’d just highlight that WD does have their own lineup of SSDs.

512Gb in a single chip is a great step ahead to getting massive amounts of storage in an SSD. Unfortunately, we will take quite some time before such technology reaches the market for us to purchase.

Western Digital is expecting the mass production to start in the second half of 2017. Once mass produced, do expect another few months for implementing such technology into SSDs and other memory products.

I can foresee that the future is bright for high-speed solid-state storage devices with large storage capacities. We’ll just need some patience in the mean time. Personally, I can’t wait for terabytes of SSDs to hit the mainstream market. I can finally save all of my games into a single SSD drive and not my hard disk!
