The OPPO R9s is a smartphone that we’ve talked about countlessly here at Nasi Lemak Tech. It’s no slouch when it comes out its camera – and today we’re going to show you why.
We’ve reviewed the OPPO R9s here not too long ago, and suffice to say – we actually love it. The camera is certainly something I can get by and use every day.
Without going much into the jargon, let’s have a quick camera spec rundown. It’s a 16MP camera with an aperture of f/1.7, PDAF for all that autofocusing magic, and uses a 1/2.8-inch sized sensor. OPPO even equipped a specially-designed Sony IMX398 sensor on the OPPO R9s! Pretty neat!
Just how exactly do those specs translate to pictures taken?
Take a look at some of the images we’ve taken here.
Now, all of these pictures are taken in full auto mode, while some of them are taken in HDR mode. Only one of them is taken in the Ultra HD mode – which we’ll go more into detail later. Pun intended, by the way.
To me, a smartphone’s camera only needs to meet a few criteria before I personally deem it to be great.
Firstly, the focusing. Taking pictures with a smartphone needs to be quick and precise regardless if your subject is moving or not – just like playing Widowmaker in Overwatch. Else, it won’t be that useful. The specially-designed Sony IMX398 sensor has something called Dual-PDAF, which helps in terms of focusing speed and accuracy.
Secondly is the clarity. Its image quality should look great in terms of details and colors, so I can upload it to my social media without changing any settings. The speed of it to take a picture does affect my camera experience too. With the OPPO R9’s f/1.7 aperture, I don’t see this as an issue.
Thirdly, its additional features. The OPPO R9s comes with a feature that allows you to take Ultra HD pictures. It’s not the first time we are seeing this feature in a smartphone – oh no, but it’s a pretty rare feature. To see it appear in OPPO R9s – it’s actually quite surprising. It’ll take a few pictures and then stitch them up together into one bigger photo. In OPPO R9s’s case, it’s a 63.7MP photo.
