Some of you may know that we’ve done a guest review over at Tech Critter for the Transcend JetDrive 820 recently. Transcend has invested a lot in the Mac ecosystem, offering better alternatives and solutions than Apple themselves have in their catalog. With that said, the latest JetDrive 825 is a Thunderbolt PCIe portable SSD made specifically for Macs. It has the same JetDrive 820 PCIe SSD as its storage media, featuring a custom 3D NAND flash and PCIe Gen. 3 x2 interface as seen in our review of the JetDrive 820 here.
In that review, we complained just one thing in particular – not having the an upgrade kit. What I meant by “upgrade kit” here is the external enclosure that converts the internal SSD into an external storage device. The StoreJet 825 addresses this issue by bundling the StoreJet 820 SSD together with the upgrade kit in one box!
As we all know, NVMe SSDs are speedy – and so is the Thunderbolt interface. 10Gb/s to be exact – theoretically. It’s not using the Thunderbolt 3 interface. The JetDrive 825 is made to expand storages for the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and Mac Pro.
Perhaps the most interesting thing is that the JetDrive 825 can also use Transcend’s in-house JetDrive Toolbox to monitor the SSD’s health and to maintain its speed. Remember, 3rd party SSDs on a Mac will require TRIM to be turned on manually. Also, make sure you upgrade the Transcend JetDrive 825’s firmware before you start using it. What we saw is that the firmware updater actually wiped off the entire SSD during the upgrade process.
The Transcend JetDrive 825 comes in 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB. They’re backed by Transcend’s five-year limited warranty too.
The bottom line is this – if you’re ever going to upgrade your MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini, or Mac Pro that is compatible with the JetDrive 825 (check compatibility list here), then get the JetDrive 825. Don’t just buy the SSD alone – you’ll have a tough time migrating your data.
