Transcend is now offering conformal coating as a customization option on its full range of embedded-use flash and DRAM products to increase their protection against a wide variety of environmental conditions such as moisture, dust, corrosion, and chemical contaminants. Sounds familiar? Perhaps you’ve experienced it before.

If any of you have touched any sort of high-quality outdoor-specific electronics before, you’ll most probably realize that the components on those PCBs have a shiny sheen on top of it. Those components don’t get corroded easily, too. That’s because they have a coating on top to protect them.

Transcend To Offer Conformal Coating

That’s what Transcend is offering for their conformal coating, too. Transcend claims that this coating will protect against moisture, dust, corrosion, and chemical contaminants. But actually, it’ll protect against ESD too. Electrostatic discharge. Conformal coating like what Transcend is able to insulate the components from ESD, too.

When it comes to creating the coat itself, there are a few methods – manual brushing, manual spraying, manual dipping, or automated spraying by machines. Manual brushing will result in an unequal stroke and the coating thickness across the PCB will be unequal. Potentially, there will be a few spots missed out too. Manually spraying will also result in unequal thickness as human hands aren’t exactly the most stable ones out there. As for dipping, it will result in a lot of material wastage. And it takes a long time for the material to drip dry. Hence, automated spraying by machines is the most controllable, stable, and can be automated. Thickness of the coating is able to be maintained.

As for what material the coating is made out of, there are acrylic, silicone, urethane, and epoxy coatings. Transcend is opting for acrylic conformal coating solution supplied by HumiSeal, as it is quick-drying and has excellent flexibility, moisture protection, electrical insulation, and fungus resistant. It is also compliant with MIL, IPC, RoHS, and UL standards, and is well-suited to most applications. Transcend also offers different coating materials for specific application needs.

Transcend’s conformal coating is applied directly to the module surface (except for the “gold-fingers”) to completely encapsulate the PCB and all mounted components. The coating shields the DRAM or flash module from environmental factors, increasing the durability and reliability of the system.

Transcend To Offer Conformal Coating

To guarantee that Transcend offers the highest quality embedded solutions, our coating process meets IPC-A-610D standards, which specify coating color, coverage, and thickness. Our coating material contains fluorescents to aid final inspection of the product. The coating is 100% inspected under UV light for distribution, quality, and uniformity.

Transcend recommends conformal coated flash and memory modules for use in harsh environments with high moisture (forests), high dust (factory, desert), or chemical contaminants. These include chemical refinery plants, automotive applications, military environments, railroad systems, and traffic control systems.
