We’ve seen something like the Vivo Nex not too long ago with the pop-up selfie camera at the top left corner. That itself is a neat little idea to give you more screen real estate while not compromising for a notch design. Little did we know, OPPO is developing another solution to achieve this “all screen” design by accommodating a pop-up design for its other components. This is the new OPPO Find X – and no, it’s not an algebra math question.
First, let’s talk about specs. The OPPO Find X has a 6.4-inch 1080p OLED screen with curved edges, reminiscent of Samsung’s curved displays. Again, no notch or chin and the nearly the entire front of the phone is occupied by the screen. Fun fact, these curved displays are only possible on an OLED panel.
Since the OPPO Find X is their new flagship smartphone, it is equipped with a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, and a larger-than-usual 3,700mAh battery. And there’s no headphone jack, if you’re wondering.
Then comes the pop-up cameras on the OPPO Find X. That pop-up compartment houses the 16MP+20MP dual rear-facing cameras (like many other smartphones) and also the 25MP selfie camera that has 3D face scanning capability. That 3D face scanning part is important, because the OPPO Find X doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner.
Shocker! OPPO used to tout its fingerprint scanner is the fastest in the world – and they’re not putting one in their latest flagship smartphone. OPPO is relying heavily on its 3D face scanner technology for face unlocking – and that means the camera will have to pop out and take a peek at you each time it needs to scan your face.
It has a bunch of sensors there too, actually.
OPPO claims that the camera can pop out in just 0.5 seconds and scan your face. However, I’m skeptical about the durability and lifespan of the protrusion mechanism – especially on the motor that controls the protrusion. What about particles that got inside or in between the slit?
The pricing and availability for the Malaysian market remains to be seen – but OPPO claims the price will be lower than flagship smartphones from other major smartphone manufacturers. That is something we’ll keep a close eye on.
