The Xperia S was supported by Sony and Google back in 2012 as an official “non-Nexus” device with full AOSP treatment. The project was halted abruptly due to licensing issues with some proprietary binaries used in Xperia S. But still, Sony demonstrated to the world that they were committed to contributing actively to AOSP, instead of treating Android developers like some cheap hackers living at the back of a house.

Fast forward to 2013 and Sony have done the same with Xperia Z, but less the Google part. They have posted the AOSP source code with most of the proprietary binaries for the Z on its GitHub. Everything, less modem and camera, seems to be working fine so far.

Sony definitely sets a high standard contributing back into Android. It’s time for device makers to stop leeching and starts feeding back. (Yes I am talking about Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, etc etc)
