Today, we have with us a product that was on our radar for quite a long time. It’s a product that goes by the name of Yeelight, but is officially known as the Mi LED Smart Bulb in Malaysia. Not sure why there is a name difference, but here’s the gist of it.

Firstly, we have to talk about Mi Home. Cumulatively, all smart home products are parked under the Mi Home umbrella – be it the smart kettle, sensors, doorbell cameras, rice cooker, and of course – the lightbulbs. Yeelight is under Xiaomi, hence that is why the app works under Mi Home as well.

Take a look at our review of the Yeelight bulbs. We integrated it into our day-to-day and studio usage to spice up the place and for a better work atmosphere.

Though with that said, there are two different apps that you need to install – the Mi Home and Yeelight app. These two apps do completely different things, with the basic features overlapping each other.

Xiaomi Yeelight

The “openness” here is in terms of how open the platform is for other developers to create their own piece of software to work with the Yeelight. Out of the box, the Yeelight is supported by Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and a few more that are also supported by the Philips Hue.

Not only that – there are other 3rd party services that can be used with the Yeelight as well. We’ve seen Razer Chroma support for the Yeelight too.

While the Yeelight’s colors and vibrancy aren’t as strong as the Philips Hue that we reviewed previously, it is an okay tradeoff given that the Yeelight is relatively affordable and works through WiFi. There is no need for a master hub!

You can buy the Yeelight here in Malaysia for the price of RM99 on both Shopee and Lazada. For us studio use who need about 2 or 3 of these, it’s a really great deal.
