Let’s start off by deconstructing a preconception. MediaTek has a wide range of chipsets and they do have chipsets that offer great performance. The MediaTek Helio G90T found in the Redmi Note 8 Pro is actually a very potent chipset – to the point where I am personally surprised.
We shall first take a look at the specs of the Redmi Note 8 Pro, as it going to dictate how this smartphone performs:
- 6.53-inch IPS LCD display with waterdrop notch
- 2340×1080 pixels in resolution
- MediaTek Helio G90T chipset
- 6GB LPDDR4X RAM
- Up to 128GB storage (UFS 2.1)
- Quadruple rear-facing cameras
- Main: 64MP Samsung GW1 sensor with f/1.89
- Ultrawide angle: 8MP f/2.2
- Macro: 2MP f/2.4 with AF; 2cm
- Depth sensor
- 20MP f/2.0 selfie camera
- 4,500mAh battery with 18W fast charging support
According to the specs sheet, the Redmi Note 8 Pro is packed with some of the best hardware – LPDDR4X RAM chips and also UFS 2.1 NAND flash for speedy loading speeds. With these two combined, this phone is expected to fly – figuratively.
Benchmarks
Let’s compare the Redmi Note 8 Pro with other smartphones in the market:
By the scores alone, the Redmi Note 8 Pro performs beyond expectations. It manages to outperform many of the smartphones in the market – and as shown in the benchmarks above, the Redmi Note 8 Pro beats all other smartphones within that price range by a significant margin. That MediaTek Helio G90T is really outstanding!
What about gaming?
Of course, the benchmarks alone aren’t going to tell you the complete story. That’s why we going to shift our focus to games – and we’ve tested it with a number of demanding games that are available on the Google Play Store now.
Firstly, we start off with Honkai Impact 3, which runs without a problem on the highest graphical settings at 60fps. While I am using the flashiest character in the game (as of now), I did experience minor frame rate dips while casting God Kiana’s ultimate skill. Otherwise, it’s smooth sailing.
As for PUBG Mobile, the Redmi Note 8 Pro can run the game in two different settings depending on which aspect you prioritize – either “ultra” frame rates with “high” graphic quality, or “ultra” frame rates with “smooth” graphic quality. I played on Sanhok all the time, and the Redmi Note 8 Pro obviously ran just fine on both graphical settings. So it’s down to a preference of wanting high frame rates or better-looking graphics. The game pretty much limits itself from having both at once.
Then comes COD Mobile. I realized that it also runs smoothly on the highest graphical setting at 60fps. I guess that game is just a piece of cake to be played on the Redmi Note 8 Pro.
And yet even after such intense gaming, the Redmi Note 8 Pro isn’t hot at all. It’s barely warmer than before I started to play games. Which we do not have a thermometer, we can say for sure that the phone stays very cool despite long hours of continuous gaming. Not even the phone’s frame is warm – and the game performance did not drop at all.

This is in part thanks to both the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset with its great thermals and also the LiquidCool technology that is found in the Redmi Note 8 Pro. The LiquidCool technology here is basically a heat pipe that help spread the heat from the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset to everywhere else of the phone. In this case, the heat from the chipset isn’t that much to begin with – which results in the phone barely heating up.
Honestly, the performance is outstanding
Let’s look at the Mi 9T Pro, which we reviewed here and love it to bits. That phone has a Snapdragon 855 chipset and obviously the benchmark numbers are going to be higher. Comparing only the gaming prowess of both phones, they’re not that much different in terms of smoothness and experience.

Which brings us to the value of these phones. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is a potent gaming smartphone and provides a gaming experience that is similar to the Mi 9T Pro (review), but with a much lower price tag.
Don’t take just our word for it – even Master Ramen, a prominent Malaysian game streamer, loves the level of performance that comes out of the Redmi Note 8 Pro. If you have the time, you can watch his livestream here.
But that’s not all…
Let’s not forget that the Redmi Note 8 Pro actually has better camera hardware than the Mi 9T Pro too. The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes with a 64MP Samsung GW1 camera instead of a 48MP Sony IMX586 camera, and has another macro camera with autofocusing capability. We have to say – the pictures that come out of the Redmi Note 8 Pro is just fantastic – take a look here.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro here is clearly made for those who want something that is priced affordably and offers fantastic levels of performance. However, the Mi 9T Pro still has a more premium build, a much nicer notchless AMOLED screen thanks to the pop-up selfie camera, and also HiRes audio. Of course, all of those added features come with a higher price.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro comes at an affordable price too – and I have to say, this attractive price is really going to make people drool. With great cameras and great performance, I can personally recommend the Redmi Note 8 Pro to my peers.
- 6GB RAM + 64GB storage @ RM1,099
- 6GB RAM + 128GB storage @ RM1,199

What’s coming next?
Currently, Xiaomi Malaysia is looking to shorten the gap between China’s and Malaysia’s smartphone launch dates. The Redmi Note 8 Pro is a good example as Malaysia is the first country to get it outside of China. Since the Redmi Note 8 Pro arrived in Malaysia in such a short time, it became Malaysia’s first 64MP smartphone. I see this as a “thank you” from Xiaomi Malaysia to us Malaysians, as we get better products sooner.
Are you looking to get the Redmi Note 8 Pro for yourself? I am currently having so much fun with the 64MP camera and the autofocusing macro camera. These two cameras take photography up to the next level.
