Biomedical engineering team at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis devised a method by using non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) to steer a computer generated aircraft – in short, it is reacting to your mind! By imagining different gestures and movements, the pilot can control the drone without moving a muscle.
Ultimately, the developers of this brain-controlled Parrot quadricopter hope to adapt their technology for directing artificial robotic limbs and other medical devices. Today’s best neural prosthetics require electrodes to be implanted in the body and are thus reserved for quadriplegics and others with disabilities severe enough justify invasive surgery.
If you’re wondering just how exactly they were able to fly a drone using thought alone, just imagine clenching your fists or left hand clenched or right hand clenched – different mental images cause different kind of movement for the drone.
perhaps this video may give you an idea on how this mind controlled drone work:
With this brain-controlled Parrot AR.Drone, I believe that we are one step closer to control robotic limbs, computers, and other technology just by the power of your mind. Really cool isn’t it? Stem cells might have an entire alternative here – exoskeleton controlling.
