Fellow Malaysians have multiple ways to solve boredom while staying indoors due to Movement Control Order, including binge-watching Netflix all day. In fact, people around the world are doing the same as well.
But Malaysians are getting what they paid for like true 4K resolution streaming for Premium plans – if our internet can maintain that bitrate, of course. However, that is not the case for the EU currently, as Netflix EU has announced that video quality degradation will happen over the course of 30 days.
Experience video quality from the last decade again
As Netflix is working with Internet Service Provider (ISP) across the EU to manage the surge of traffic and potentially bandwidth overloading, they are deploying 2 forms of countermeasures.
For movies that still have HD and Ultra HD options available, their bitrate (BR) will be reduced. While it doesn’t seem like a big deal, it will reduce the overall clarity and color accuracy due to carrying fewer data.
On the other hand, some movies will directly have its highest quality option greyed out for the moment, for example, 720p movies will get downgraded to 480p quality. That is some 2010 flashbacks right there.
Take a look at the official announcement by Netflix right here.
In Malaysia, it seems that we are still doing all right without any bandwidth overloading occurring recently. And hopefully, it stays the same until the end of March where the Movement Control Order will finally end (May or may not) and Jay Chou’s show just debuted recently, in case you missed it.
