There are a lot of things to like about the new Samsung Galaxy S20 series of smartphones. If we talked about all of them in our review, it’ll be half an hour long. So, we decided to look at a few aspects of the Galaxy S20 series that stood out to us.
For a more general look at the Galaxy S20 series of smartphones, we reviewed both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20 Ultra here. Both of these flagship smartphones have a lot of similarities but the idea remained the same – they’re both flagship smartphones.
1. That amazing display
For the latest Galaxy S20 series of smartphones, Samsung has upgraded to use the new Dynamic AMOLED 2X displays. They’re essentially the same as its predecessor in terms of pixel count, colors, and overall quality.
To maximize the screen-to-body ratio, Samsung developed a rather technologically-advanced proximity sensor. Samsung used this proximity sensor since the Galaxy S10 series, and I’m glad that the new Galaxy S20 series still has this technology.
For us, we enjoyed watching movies and YouTube videos on the Galaxy S20 series. We can set it up to 1440p resolution and stream videos at that resolution too. The amount of pixels in this Dynamic AMOLED screen is more than my 29-inch desktop monitor. Imagine that!
The “2X” in its name means that it is now double the refresh rate compared to its predecessor. Yes – the Galaxy S20 now sports a 120Hz refresh rate display. As OLED screens have fast pixel response time, using the 120Hz on the Galaxy S20 feels extraordinary. It’s silky smooth and there is no “smearing” look, too.
2. Sleek design
Ah yes, the design. The Galaxy S series of smartphones always have beautiful bodies with a premium build quality. Both the Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+ come in a thin, lightweight body – and available in a few different colors too.
My personal favorite is going to be the Cloud Blue, which is available for both the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+. To look as dapper as we can ever be, there’s also the Cosmic Grey and Cosmic Black color options too.

Concerns were saying that the camera bump on the Galaxy S20 series is rather thick. Well, there is some truth to it. The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ have a rather tiny camera bump – it’s nearly flushed with the phone body itself. The Galaxy S20 Ultra, with a much beefier camera system, has a thicker camera bump – and that is to be expected.
That’s where the accessories come into play.
3. The slew of accessories
To protect the cameras on a smartphone, it is always wise to put on a protective case. When the camera is not in direct contact with any surfaces, then you’re safe. So why not express ourselves while we’re at it?

Introducing, a slew of new accessories for the Galaxy S20 series of smartphones. There are a total of 7 different types of cases available – each of them in a variety of colors, too. There’s truly something for everyone to choose from.

I particularly like the new Smart LED Cover because Samsung revamped the design. It is now using a high-quality, dense matte finish so that it will last longer and scratches will not be as prominent. Even the matte finish can diffuse the light nicely – creating a beautiful starry night sky look.

But, the new Kvadrat covers are exclusive for the Galaxy S20+ only. It looks great too – especially the green color one. It’s designed in Denmark and has with Scandinavian design tradition. The new Kvadrat Cover is made from the textile Revive. Revive is made out of recycled polyester (PET). In this case, according to Samsung, one plastic bottle can be repurposed to produce two Galaxy S20+ Kvadrat phone cases.
To further take advantage of that beautiful Dynamic AMOLED screen, Samsung also has the Protective Standing Cover for the Galaxy S20 series. This case meets the US Military Drop test (MIL-STD-810G) but it also has a kickstand that has two angles to choose from. Great for watching videos while cooking or during our lunchtime.

4. Improved ergonomics
Samsung listened to feedback and improved upon the ergonomics of the Galaxy S20 series. I think there are a few things that Samsung did right this time around.
Number 1, the under-display fingerprint scanner location. It has been moved to a place where our thumbs naturally rest on the screen. This minor detail improved my personal user experience so much.
Number 2, we now have a proper power button position. Compared to the Galaxy S10 series, this new power button makes sense – it’s reachable with one hand without readjusting the position and grip of the phone.
Which leads us to number 3 – the removal of the Bixby button. I guess Samsung already knew that many people won’t even use that button anyway, so why not remove it and make the button placements more ergonomic?
5. A complete upgrade over its predecessor
There is a huge leap in specs and overall user experience compared to its predecessor. In terms of performance, the Galaxy S20 series is better. Samsung also revamped the entire camera system on the S20 series and they are now able to deliver the best-in-class picture quality within a split second.

Looking at the specs alone, even the base model Galaxy S20 is a direct replacement of the Galaxy S10+. Faster charging, better battery life, upgraded cameras, and many more improvements. Let’s not forget that Samsung’s One UI and all of its features are still here.
For the Galaxy S20 series to have the starting price of RM3,599, I think it’s a great deal. And Samsung still has the Trade-Up program that is extended until 31st May 2020.
