4 years ago, I saw the early prototype of a smoke microphone. The idea is using a laser to capture sound waves – purely the sound wave alone, and without disturbing the soundwave itself. Common microphones uses diaphragm that when sound wave hits it, the vibration will be translated into digital sound. The problem with this method is that the captured sound was the final result of the soundwave vibrating the diagram thus, some of the wave has been lost or disrupted by the physical movement of the diagram .
By using lights or lasers, we can now record soundwaves without disturbing or making any physical contact that might disrupt the wave. Sennheiser recently invented a laser microphone that can record vibration from drums by using lasers. The lasers would have to be pointed to the drum and the change in vibration will be recorded by the reflection of the laser. This also means eliminating all background noise or any other interference!
Hopefully, photonics will be widely used where we all be talking to laser microphones instead of this old microphone technology. Can’t wait to listen how bad FLAC music files are!
