When it comes to the world of smartphones, we’re not sure why the practice of cheating in benchmarks is so common. We have seen such things happen many times across multiple different brands of smartphones. However, this time around, it’s not the smartphone manufacturer’s fault – it seems to be MediaTek’s doing.

I thought MediaTek chips were doing well – but it seems like we cannot trust their benchmarks anymore.

MediaTek’s way of cheating in benchmarks is nothing new. It detects the app that’s running and check with its list. If an app like PCMark is running and it’s on the list, then it’ll automatically use performance mode (MediaTek calls it “sports mode”) and give itself a performance boost.

Users like you and me cannot deliberately use “sports mode” since MediaTek did not allow it as a user-customizable option.

How AnandTech confirmed that MediaTek is cheating in benchmarks is not new either. They obtained a disguised version of PCMark benchmark app (under a different app name) and compared the scores with the Google Play Store version of PCMark. AnandTech found that there is about a 30% score difference between the disguised and official version of PCMark. That’s huge!

AnandTech confirmed that multiple different smartphones from multiple different brands, including OPPO, realme, and Vivo.

We have the realme 6 with us – and it is powered by the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset. And we have also discovered power_whitelist_cfg.xml file and extracted it. If you want to have a look and study the file for yourself, click here.

AnandTech also reached out to MediaTek and they actually got a statement back. You can read the full statement on AnandTech’s website, but we’re going to summarize it:

We believe that showcasing the full capabilities of a chipset in benchmarking tests is in line with the practices of other companies and gives consumers an accurate picture of device performance.

In short, we don’t think that MediaTek is going to remove this even after being caught red-handed.

Massive thanks to AnandTech for spending so much time and energy to discover, study, and proof that MediaTek is cheating in benchmarks. Please click here to read the full report on AnandTech’s website.
