Google just launched their new project called Loon, which sets to make the Internet really available for every single person on Earth – and they mean it, even in other unfortunate countries. When we speak of the those who have and those who don’t, we’re talking about the great digital divide that sets those who knows and doesn’t know how to operate current-generation technologies apart from each other.
Project Loon, shortcut from the word balloon, wants to create the opportunity for everyone to use the Internet at their own advantage through balloons. By having the Internet-enabled balloons fly up twice as high as airplanes, they are carried by the natural wind blows. How do we connect to the internet? We just attach a special Internet antenna on our buildings. The signals will be transmitted and received through Internet-enabled balloons. But how? Much like our mobile phone’s cellphone tower that has a grid system, the signals actually bounce off balloons after balloons to make an entire grid of coverage, extended from a designated point.
I do question though, what if coincidentally a specific area have all the Loons blown away? There won’t be Internet access for them too. Also, what if flying creatures went and popped it? That I think Google will have it handled, though it does concern me a lot.
Here’s also a brief introductory video by Google about the project itself.
