Volvo demos smartphoneenabled selfparking car prototype videoAs we know that Google and Audi are also the companies that are developing autonomous vehicle technology – in layman’s terms, self-driving cars. Volvo however, is applying its to work in the area of a particular usage case: parking.

Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor Volvo Car Group says that:

Autonomous Parking is a concept technology that relieves the driver of the time-consuming task of finding a vacant parking space. The driver just drops the vehicle off at the entrance to the car park and picks it up in the same place later.

The most exciting about this new technology is that the driver uses a mobile phone application to activate the Autonomous Parking and then walks away from the car.

The vehicle uses sensors to localise and navigate to a free parking space. The procedure is reversed when the driver comes back to pick up the car. With the combination of autonomous driving with detection and auto-brake for other objects makes it more safe when it come to interact with other cars.

Here is the video of the self-parking car prototype:

As a summary, this Volvo prototype car (V40) with sensors, electronics and controls are seamlessly built, making the tech look production-ready, which I believe it will soon in the market in a few years time. Hopefully there are more and more of these amazing vehicles available in the market too!
