Samsung has uncovered details about its effort in tackling environmental issues, particularly in slowing down the rise of global temperature.

Samsung HQ Korea Solar Panel

Being one of the involved companies that adhere to the Paris Agreement of limiting the global temperature increase to 2 degrees Celsius – preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, they managed to achieve full renewable energy self-supply efficiency for worksites in the USA, China, and Europe while its HQ in Korea also packs solar panels to generate and use solar powers on their own as well.

The concept of solar-powered peripherals has also crept into some of its products such as the TV remote for the Neo QLED TVs all the while using recycled materials to form its product packaging to reduce carbon footprint across the entire manufacturing cycle. Besides all of these, there are some things that can’t be seen directly from the exterior such as tiny hardware inside smart devices which are made with recycled materials and reducing power wastage by heavily limiting the performance of chargers during idle.

Samsung Galaxy Carbon Trust

While Samsung has been doing all they can at the bigger scale of things, the B2C area that targets the mass public is kinda goofy on the other hand. And you’ll probably know what I’m referring to.

Yes, the absence of charging bricks starting with the Galaxy S21 series and eventually the wired headphones as well. Technically a Yes in reducing the number of unnecessary product units and subsequently cutting down the number of chargers getting flunked into e-waste dumps while also “following” Apple’s trend of doing things in the industry, I personally am not against this decision as it really does help.

But, take a look at Xiaomi’s decision to follow suit but ended up as an optional choice for buyers to pick whether they needed it or not – The answer is simple. The mass consumer market doesn’t have sufficient environmental awareness to do such a thing, especially when there are no clear trade-offs that allow them to see a potential gain from losing out something else. This move by Xiaomi, in my opinion, kinda missed the point of saving the environment when most buyers will just opt-in to get the charger. Don’t get me started about the use of proprietary charging standards when in reality, such a thing only forces people to get the bundled charger more than it discourages.

A better strategy for doing this (Not only for Samsung but for any brand with smartphone division out there) is to give other forms of compensation to buyers that are both tangible and easy to grasp – Instant rebates, exclusive member privileges, free subscription service plans – Anything that doesn’t really cost environmental resources to provide that will let customers feel not losing out on anything while only getting the charger when they are absolutely new to the platform. And I can tell you, the latter of the example can really attract user traffics to try out new subscription services and ended up becoming a regular that also benefits partners as well. A cool example is the bundling of Youtube Premium with purchases of Galaxy devices not long ago.

While following the decision of industry giants is apparently the way of doing business but why not take a clearer look and perhaps craft your own unique and practical way of doing things right so that others get to follow your steps as well.
