Google I/O 2021 has concluded and one of the most interesting news that came out of nowhere during the keynote was the future of Wear OS. Google is now partnering up with Samsung to “merged” Google’s Wear OS and Samsung’s own Tizen.

Many thought that Google has abandoned Wear OS since there was no high-profile product launch for a long time while Apple is making waves after waves with its Apple Watch.

Google’s solution to this is to merge with Samsung’s Tizen to get a headstart and to compete with Apple.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2

Being a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active smartwatch user myself, I have to say that even after so many years, its performance is still amazing. Its feature set is rivaled by none because of how many developers Tizen have.

Sure, the battery life of a true smartwatch isn’t good, but its ecosystem is expandable and I can download whatever apps available to make it even more functional – like Spotify.

With that said, this also shows how important software really is as Google only highlights 3 different main reasons for this Wear OS-Tizen merger: faster performance, longer battery life, and thriving developer community.

Only works with Spotify Premium. This feature is a few years old now.

The first two reasons are mostly regarding hardware – which can be fixed through stuffing in a faster chipset and bigger battery – but the developer community is something that’s just impossible.

I’m very excited about the future of smartwatches now. Perhaps even the rumored Galaxy Watch Active 3 will be using this new Wear OS-Tizen system. What will happen to Bixby? What other existing Tizen and Wear OS watches will be upgraded to this new system?

We’ll have to wait for further news.
