As we’re preparing for the upcoming generation of Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold devices, let’s take a look at some unique features that are only possible on these devices with a flexible display.

Samsung’s Galaxy flip and fold devices are pretty amazing, honestly. On top of just being able to flip or fold the device and morph them into different form factors, it also has a lot more features made possible by the hardware and software.

So, let’s take a look at a few of our favorite features that are already available on Samsung’s foldable devices.

A hinge that can stay open at certain angles

The first generation Galaxy Fold had a floppy hinge – it’s either opened all the way at 180º or closed shut at 0º. One of the best features that were introduced since the Galaxy Z Flip is the hinge which can stay open at a certain range of angles.

In fact, I loved this feature too much to the point where I mentioned that it is a viable alternative to having a tripod. I mean, it’s essentially a built-in tripod at that point.

Samsung implemented the dual cam mechanism into the hinge to make this possible while introducing something called the “hideaway hinge” to keep the profile of the foldable device smaller than ever. It’s a truly amazing engineering feat.

Ultra Thin Glass

It’s no surprise that any sort of material made thin enough will be bendable – and glass is no exception. The first generation of the Galaxy Fold had a polymer screen that can easily be marked by a fingernail or anything that introduces resistance to the screen.

When Samsung introduced the Ultra Thin Glass, or UTG, it is certainly intriguing since glass does not bend. With some clever engineering, Samsung did introduce bendable glass to the Galaxy Z Flip last year.

When the Galaxy Z Fold2 came around, I was even more intrigued. The crease was much “flatter” compared to the Galaxy Fold that had a polymer screen. The difference is especially noticeable when I rolled my finger across the crease.

The adaptive UI

While having the hardware is part of the equation, its software integration is also important. I always believe that the marriage between hardware and software is important to create a unified, coherent user experience.

Specifically for the Fold, the ability to transition from the small cover display to the big tablet-sized screen is a unique huge boon. For those who work on their mobile devices (like me), then you know why. Certain websites just don’t work well with conventional phone displays. I feel dreadful whenever I need to read emails on my phone.

Yet for the Galaxy Z Fold series of devices, I can literally unfold into a bigger screen and voila, I can see so much more.

Coupled with Samsung’s fantastic One UI, the Fold is literally a productivity workhouse.

The multitasker’s dream

Sometimes, having a bigger screen doesn’t just mean viewing one thing at a time. Maybe I want to view two different documents to cross-reference something, or I want to compare prices while shopping online.

Having the ability to open multiple windows on the Fold is yet another one of those things that can only be done because it can be unfolded into a larger screen.

Taking selfies using the rear camera

It’s quite an obvious thing to do, right? Since both the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 have a cover display, that means you can literally “look” at yourself through the rear-facing camera, and take pictures.

You can even use the hinge to prop up the device like a tripod and then set a timer to capture a picture of yourself. It’s up to how you want to capture the picture. I love such flexibilities.

That satisfying *click*

Ever clapped a flip phone so hard that it created that satisfying click sound? You can do it with the Fold and Flip.
