One of the most viral news in the music industry recently is none other than Kanya West renting a whole stadium and holed himself up to make his latest album Donda but hackers and scammers are taking the chance of spreading malware by hopping in the hype train.
Kaspersky has decided to dive into an espionage campaign of finding out whether cybercriminals took advantage of the album’s popularity and subsequently baiting people into installing malicious programs. And yes, they did found out 2 files that disguised exceptionally well:
- Download-File-KanyeWestDONDA320.zip_88481.msi
- Kanye West _ DONDA (Explicit) (2021) Mp3 320kbps [PMEDIA] __ – Downloader.exe
The first one is your typical “Complete a survey to reveal download link” kind of bullshit but instead of asking for your mobile number for the “SMS Bait and Switch Premium Charge”, this one convinces you to try bitcoin mining and asks you to install “programs” for free, you get the deal.
The second one is even more obfuscated as only tech-savvy users can identify the “.
So better think twice before downloading anything that could impose risk on yourself and possibly the people around you. Here’s some tip to avoid getting jebaited.
- Get music sources from official platforms only (i.e Apple iTunes, Google Music, Spotify, Youtube Music, and more)
- Check for file extensions before executing them
- Double confirm the website’s address before keying in any sensitive information. If you have already given out your info, lockout the access by either changing password or request for account deactivation
- Get antivirus software with malware detection
