Have you ever wanted your phone to act like the good ol’ desktop computers where you just take out certain hardware to upgrade or replace it? Phonebloks might make it possible.

The background of the idea is that the electronic waste is building up very fast due to unwanted mobile phones with just one small component failure. To counter that, Phonebloks offer the parts or components for this matter, to be completely detachable – making it completely modular.

See each of the blocks? Those are the features for your hardware. Everything is up to your customization and you can plug anything, anywhere, however you want it to be. The best part of this modularity is that you CAN even change the screen itself. Yea, the screen. Tired of your stupid WGA resolution screen? Change it to a new 1080p resolution screen while keeping your hardware. The video below will give you a much clearer idea.

The craziest thing that I can think of is where you attach two cameras at the back to take 3D images, or maybe a stripping off most of the unnecessary sensors in the phone and include just the most basic things like camera, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, then attach a super processor and all the leftover space to have be taken up by the battery!

I’m concerned however, about the size of the board as there are only a fixed number of connectors and it seems to be quite limited, though on their website they claim that it can be “adapted into other sizes to create new devices like tablets, cameras etc.”. Another concern is… well it’ll be very difficult to pull out the components in the middle of other components without removing the entire board. Also, how well will the components be held by the board?

The most important question is – will this piece of engineering magic ever be made real?
