DJI Malaysia has announced the latest flagship drone, the Mavic 3 that amps up the iconic folding camera-equipped flying robot with lots of technological improvements to meet the ever-increasing needs of video production.
As DJI’s long term partner, of course, the Mavic 3 is going to utilize Hasselblad’s offering which is now a 4/3 CMOS sensor with 24mm prime lens that is capable of shooting 20MP 12-bit RAW images and 5.1K/50fps for stunning video quality or 4K/120fps for smooth and silky footages. Low light environments are also child’s play for the camera thanks to the 12.8 stops of native dynamic range to provide a greater sense of depth while the 2nd camera uses a 162mm f/4.4 telephoto lens with 28x hybrid zoom of digital plus optical enables a wide area shot at the start while slowly moving in towards closer target while maintaining clarity.
Carried over to the Mavic 3 from the Mavic 2 is the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution (HNCS) algorithm that captures up to 1 billion colors through a 10-bit D-Log color profile that can be then encoded into the Apple ProRes 422 HQ format for easier and faster post-production progress on Apple machines. To be noted, the encoding feature is exclusive to the Mavic 3 Cine model.
The improvements are not only about the lens and video recording-related stuff but also towards the rest of the hardware. For example, the battery life has been extended from the usual 30 minutes to the new 46 minutes to allow more footage to be taken in one go while the optimized propellers and motors together with reduced overall weight make the Mavic 3 produce 35% less drag to help the flying boy reach top speed earlier than previous models. It also carries modern techs from recent models such as the Return to Home system that helps the drone return to the starting point and enhanced signal range through DJI O3+ and Cellular Transmission Dongle to keep the connection stable.
Introduced with the core Mavic 3 drone is the range of accessories to support the user and drone for new ways of interactions or at the very least, smoothen the user experience and extend the capabilities of the device. Let’s go through them briefly.
