The brand new Galaxy S22 series of smartphones is finally here! We had some time with all of the 3 phones, so let’s take a look at what’s new.
If you want to just watch me talk about what’s new, then watch our video here. We literally made this entire video within 12 hours, so please watch it.
We also have yet another video where we talked about the Galaxy Tab S8 series of tablets as well.
Galaxy S22 Ultra
Technically, the new Galaxy S22 Ultra is what the Galaxy Note series is supposed to be. Samsung literally integrated the Note into the S series and calling it the S22 Ultra. That actually makes sense since the Galaxy Note series used to be the Galaxy S series of phones but with a different design and with the S Pen inside.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is available in a total of 4 different colors, and they’re all in a matte finish as well:
- Phantom White
- Phantom Black
- Green
- Burgundy
The Galaxy S22 Ultra is also using the Armour Aluminium chassis to provide extra strength, and comes with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ for both front and back of the phone too.
When it comes to the chipset, that’s where things get interesting. For the first time here in Malaysia, we’re getting the Snapdragon version – this time is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It’s disappointing, honestly. Just when the Exynos chipset is getting interesting with the AMD GPU, we get the Snapdragon chip.
Oh – Samsung is also collaborating with LAMY – the pen brand – to create this unique pen that can be a ballpoint pen or an S Pen by just twisting the top. Neat!
Samsung also flexed their engineering skills this time as they’ve retained a 5,000mAh battery inside the phone despite having to sacrifice some space for the S Pen to be slotted inside the phone.
This new S Pen also got an upgrade as its latency has been decreased from 9ms to 2.8ms thanks to the new AI-based coordinate prediction technology and Wacom’s new hardware.
Samsung also expanded the inter-device connectivity as the new Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra and the Galaxy S22 Ultra can work together. One example Samsung gave is connecting the S22 Ultra with the Tab S8, then the S22 Ultra becomes a tools palette and the Tab S8 becomes a big canvas, free of distraction.
Let’s now talk about the cameras of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The main 108MP camera sensor got upgraded to a larger size and Samsung focused a lot in terms of night photography this time around. We’ll spare you the details since we rather show you the pictures instead of just talking about it.
What’s good is that both Pro Mode and the downloadable Expert RAW app are available on the Galaxy S22 Ultra too! I have to tell you that the Expert RAW app is one of the best features available on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and I’m glad we’ll have it on the S22 Ultra too.
Samsung is also collaborating with Snapchat to bring native support for Super Resolution and Night Mode so that we can shoot amazing pictures and videos directly from the Snapchat app.
Oh – one new accessory Samsung is releasing in tandem with the Galaxy S22 series is this universal adapter thing that allows your phones to use professional-grade lens filters too. The example we had was an ND filter but we can literally screw in any filters we want – like UV filters or polarizers.
Two more things to mention before we move on – I compared the camera bumps on the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy S22 Ultra and I found out that they’re both pretty much the same thickness but the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s bump feels smaller since it doesn’t have that big bulge.

The battery is the same as before – 5,000mAh, but the charging speed got bumped back up to 45W wired fast charging – so that’s good. There is no charger packed together in the box, just like the S21 series.
Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+
This time around, for the design of these two phones, they have a flat surface for both the front and back glass, which is also covered by the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ and has the Armoured Aluminium chassis for rigidity. The back is also in the same matte finish, by the way.
As for the colors available, they’re a little different this time around:
- Phantom White
- Phantom Black
- Green
- Pink Gold
In terms of specs, there are a few changes here and there. For both the Galaxy S22 and S22+, the camera got tweaked – they’re kinda similar to the Galaxy A72.
- Main: 50MP
- Ultrawide: 12MP
- Telephoto with 3x zoom: 10MP
The battery capacity of these two phones also got tuned down by 300mAh, so the S22 is now at 3,700mAh and the S22+ is at 4,500mAh. Honestly, I consider the S21’s 4,000mAh to be the bare minimum and now they’re just downgrading it.
The charging speed of the Galaxy S22+ got improved to 45W wired fast charging though. However, the Galaxy S22 is only at 25W.
New software update support policy
I’ve seen the leaks and rumors saying that the Samsung Galaxy S22 series will be getting 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security patches. I have personally asked the team here – and yes, that is indeed true.
I’m amazed as Samsung is stepping up their already-great software update policy to literally be the best in the whole Android smartphone market. Not even Google themselves is able to beat Samsung’s commitment.
