I personally do have a few reasons why I love the Xiaomi 12 series, and I think these reasons do make me think that this could be one of the best smartphones of the year 2022.
The uncompromised flagship specs
Let’s not beat around the bush – the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro are flagship premium smartphones after all, and they obviously come with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset.
From my personal experience, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is a much better chipset compared to its predecessor in terms of the efficiency per FPS in intensive games like Genshin Impact. We have published our gaming tests for both the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro and performed a temperature check with our thermal camera too.
Despite having the same chipset, these two phones are going to perform differently due to the difference in size and hence the difference in mass and surface area, resulting in different thermal throttling temperature thresholds.
Fantastic design
I have no idea what sort of material Xiaomi used for both the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro. It looks and feels a little like the famous Sandstone Black but not as rough. The only best way to describe it is something satisfying to touch all day long. It feels like therapy to me.
Of course, that’s not all – both the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 pro are also available in a variety of different colors to amplify your personality.
The camera bump also got a flair of its own as it has these lines that divide the camera bump. I think the arrangement of these squares are inspired by the Fibonacci spiral?
Cameras for all your photography needs
Both these phones come with a triple camera setup, but they’re both very different from each other.
Let’s start with the Xiaomi 12. It has a main camera, an ultrawide angle camera, and a telephoto-macro camera.
That telephoto-macro camera is my absolute favorite as it can take some fantastic macro shots with super sharp and clear details. There is no other substitute to “mimic” this kind of quality, yet this camera is only available on a few smartphones. I’m glad that it’s on the Xiaomi 12.
As for the Xiaomi 12 Pro, the cameras got a big upgrade. All three cameras – the main, ultrawide, and 2x optical zoom telephoto camera – are using 50MP sensors. The pictures taken by any of the 3 cameras on the Xiaomi 12 Pro look absolutely stunning.
That is thanks to Xiaomi’s advanced AI algorithms as it computationally enhances pictures to make them look pixel-perfect for each shot.
There are even other modes for us to use and expand our creativity too – and now it has Ultra Night Video to take even better videos at low-light conditions and you can film your own Batman parody if you want to.
Elevated audio and visual experience
When I first looked at the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro, they both come with one singular point that I love the most – the bezels are really thin, and both the displays are magnificent.
The Xiaomi 12 is a compact phone and comes with a 6.28-inch curved OLED screen with up to 120Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 2400×1080. I don’t really have any complaints about this screen at all – we also used our colorimeter to confirm that it can go up to 500 nits of brightness average and it also has a very color-accurate screen.
As for the Xiaomi 12 Pro, it comes with a larger 6.7-inch curved OLED screen with the same 120Hz refresh rate but at a much higher resolution of 3200×1440. This screen is also much brighter as our colorimeter reported a peak brightness of about 500 nits while still retaining the high color accuracy.
It’s no wonder that these two phones got A+ from DisplayMate. These are really good displays. And to protect them from getting scratches, Xiaomi also equipped them with the Corning Gorilla Victus glass.
When it comes to audio, Xiaomi somehow did the unthinkable. They fitted the Xiaomi 12 Pro with a quad-speaker setup – the first on a Xiaomi smartphone – and it is powered by SOUND BY Harman Kardon.
The quad-speaker setup covers most of the frequency spectrum as it has two tweeters and two woofers.
Superfast charging
Yeah, I mean that in a literal sense. This is the fastest charging available on a smartphone that you can go out and buy to use it for yourself. The Xiaomi 12 comes with a 67W charger whereby the Xiaomi 12 Pro comes with an insanely high 120W charger.
Both these phones can charge at breakneck speeds so rest assured, you can go take a quick toilet break and come back with more than enough battery to last longer than your coffee.
Xiaomi’s VIP service package
This is something new to me. Xiaomi is upping their game by providing a premium aftersales support and they are calling this the “VIP service package”. Pre-order any of the Xiaomi 12 series of smartphones and you can enjoy these premium services:
