Introducing, the new Black Shark 5 series of smartphones, which consists of two phones – the Black Shark 5 and also the Black Shark 5 Pro. These two phones are going to be launched together on 8th June 2022, unlike last generation’s Black Shark 4 series.

Let’s talk about the Black Shark 5 Pro first. There are a few things that are new here. It has this list of specs:

  • 6.67-inch OLED screen
    • 2400×1080 pixels in resolution
    • 144Hz refresh rate
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
    • 5320mm² dual vapor chamber cooling
  • 12GB or 16GB RAM
  • 256GB storage
  • Triple rear-facing cameras
    • Main: 108MP f/1.8 with PDAF
    • Ultrawide: 13MP f/2.4
    • Tele-macro: 5MP f/2.4 with AF
  • 4,650mAh battery
    • 120W charging (120W charger included)
  • Magnetic popup triggers
  • Dual-zone pressure-sensitive screen
  • Touch Control Master Algorithm with 720Hz touch sampling rate

Looking at the specs alone, the Black Shark 5 Pro is an incremental upgrade over the already-great Black Shark 4 Pro. There are a few things that are upgraded – like the chipset, main camera’s sensor, and also a very slight bump in terms of battery capacity.

One thing that I am divided about is the removal of the audio jack. I usually am okay with this but not for a gaming phone. However advanced TWS earphones are, they’re still using Bluetooth and Bluetooth will introduce delay.

There are a few more highlights – like the new Joy UI 13 and also a brand new, revamped Shark Space to provide a better experience while gaming.

There is also a bypass mode so that we can play games with the phone plugged in, and doesn’t affect the battery at all. This will help in two things – a decrease in overall heat production since the battery is bypassed, and the battery’s lifespan should be longer too.

Speaking of the battery, the Black Shark 5 Pro is using a dual-cell battery.

The Black Shark 5 though, I’d say has more upgrades from the Black Shark 4. Here are the specs:

    • 2400×1080 pixels in resolution
    • 144Hz refresh rate
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 870
    • “Sandwich” vapor chamber
  • Configurations
    • 8GB RAM + 128GB storage
    • 12GB RAM + 256GB storage
  • Triple rear-facing cameras
    • Main: 64MP f/1.8 with PDAF
    • Ultrawide: 13MP f/2.4
    • Macro: 2MP f/2.4 (fixed focus)
  • 4,650mAh battery
    • 120W charging (120W charger included)

Yeah… it’s a mirror finish

The most notable upgrade from the Black Shark 4 is the pressure-sensitive screens. I absolutely loved that feature and I have described it in-depth in our review of the Black Shark 4 last year, and you can watch it here.

Surprisingly, the new Black Shark 5 also has the bypass mode to bypass the battery too – just like the Black Shark 5 Pro. And of course, it also comes with a dual-cell battery to go extremely fast with its charging speed.

Can’t I buy the imported version already?

You can – but you’ll have to be careful. Assuming that you’re buying the Black Shark 5 series directly from China, you’ll not be getting the full 4G band support, and 5G will probably also not work in Malaysia.

Let’s not forget that buying the China version means you don’t get GMS too – and many games will not work. So, just be patient and wait for the local version.
