Right, so that’s the new logo for the new UI of Facebook’s Messenger. It looks pretty basic – follows Apple’s iOS7 flat design too. Okay, so that’s nice. Surely it gives you a hint of what interface design to expect, no?

After getting the new update, Facebook notified me that if I’m in the beta program, I’ll get the beta interface straight away, but the fact is, I’m not in it and now I’m stuck with the disgusting beta interface. Oh – I shouldn’t mention anything about the disgusting colours and annoying sound effects just yet. Let me walk you through the entire app’s new design.

The first thing after getting the update was being messaged by someone. Well, I was pretty surprised to see that the interface changed. Why not explore a little, right? The Messages app became something that looks horribly familiar to any iOS7 user, because it is exactly the same interface as the iOS7’s iMessage. At least for the colour scheme and the basic layout.

Opening the Messaging app itself, there is a major overhaul here as things got replaced and merged, then changed into a tab-in-a-tab design. Cascading tabs are surely efficient, as Facebook did only 2 tabs to maintain efficiency. As shown in the screenshot above, Facebook made the Active tab here to let you toggle your status on mobile to either online or offline, as well as to see whether your peers are online on the web or on mobile.

The small Messenger and Facebook logo also shows if your peers are on Messenger or not. If it only has a lightning bolt (the Messenger app logo), means that they’re on Messenger and has a grey Facebook logo if they’re not on Messenger.

Facebook also made the button – oh no, it’s an entire fat bar of pixels – to send a new message. It functions the same as before, still.

Lastly, Facebook reworked their Settings menu for the app too. The basic Facebook chat enable, Notifications, Chat heads,Location are still here, but the biggest surprise is the In-app sounds. You get to hear a bunch of different and annoying sound effects when you refresh, send a sticker, send a message, received a message or received a sticker. Again I must emphasize that all sound effects are different. Imagine if you are doing this on a higher speed, all sorts of weird sounds start coming out of your device.

All in all I’d describe the new interface with one word – disgusting. It’s a direct rip-off from the iOS7’s iMessage app with some Facebook additions and a bunch of annoying sound effects for every action you do. Best of all, I can’t revert back to the non-beta version of Messenger since it’s linked to my Facebook account.

Another thing to weep about – when do you think Facebook will bring this interface to Android? It’s an eyesore, really.

But of course, I’m only complaining about the interface design. The layout is okay except for the super wide “Send a new message” bar at the bottom, as if the navigation bar is invisible. The performance increase however is very good – everything is sped up! The downside of this speed is of course the annoying sound effects that just keep on popping out nonstop…
