Raw-Image-Format-Files-are-now-supported-in-Windows-7-Explorer

Let’s start off with a short introduction to what RAW format photos actually are. RAW photos, as the name suggests, is quite literally raw – in a sense that it is not compressed in any way, making fine-tuning of the photo’s exposure, whites, blacks, contrast, hue and whatnot to be possible. Of course, noise will be showing out when you do that to an extreme level, but then again it can bring new life to your disgusting looking picture.

Of course, you’ll need special software to get the best out of RAW format photos like Photoshop for example. You can now find RAW format photos available to be selected on every digital SLRs you can find – even those photos I took for reviews were in RAW format, then processed through Photoshop and compressed to JPG.

The biggest problem that I believe will scare everyone away from using RAW format is that each RAW photo takes up about 13MB on a 14.2MP digital SLR. The funniest thing about RAW format is that if your photo is monochromatic, then it’ll take up much less space, because there aren’t any other colour codes in the entire bitmap in the image. Assuming that – like digital SLRs – you can take RAW and JPG together, you’ll end up taking at least 15MB per shot on a 8MP camera.

However though, I am looking forward to how Google will implement RAW format photos on the Android OS. Surely it’ll make casual DSLR users weep as a smartphone can now outperform entry level DSLRs with kit lenses. At least smartphones don’t get the clarity and manual controls like a DSLR though.
