As most of you tech enthusiast may know, the idea of a modular phone has surface for quite a while since PhoneBloks pitched in. The idea is to have your phone designed in a modular manner so every function can be replaced or upgraded to create a future proof and cost-saving phone. Their goal is to ultimately reduce electronic waste caused by phones that are thrown away just because a single function is outdated or broken. With this modular idea, you could just upgrade the outdated components or by simply changing broken components such as the screen or camera. It even allows you to customize the phone fully by for example, removing the camera and put a larger battery in. Users also get to choose those individual blocks from different manufacturers.

Just recently Motorola has jumped into this idea and has initiated Project Ara to further develop the idea and produce modular smartphones.

The deal was told to last for a couple of years with 3D Systems. Soon, we will see the very first modular smartphone created by Motorola hitting the commercial market. I am just hoping that this project will not be a failure such as the ambitious Ubuntu Phone. At first I was quite skeptical, but then it’s good to keep an open mind 🙂
