Xiaomi has revealed what they are calling the Zero-carbon Philosophy in an effort to step up their responsibility in creating a better environment as a leading business in the technology sector.

Xiaomi Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Target

Speaking from a goal standpoint, the brand is aiming for a 98% reduction by the time the year 2040 rolls around, and by 2050, they want a clean net zero emission. Both of these are expected to achieve by reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions with the following milestones:

  • Reduce at least 70% emissions from main operating segments from the base year level no later than 2030
  • Reduce at least 98% emissions from main operating segments from the base year level no later than 2040
  • Prioritize the use of low-carbon technologies, long-term green power purchase agreements, and on-site renewable energy generation
  • Encourage key suppliers to establish renewable energy usage and GHG emission

Aside from cutting down on the production side, they are also producing things that lead to less energy use for consumers such as 5G Energy Saving Signal Transmission, Dark Mode, more efficient Fast Charge, and Eco-Friendly Packaging.

Xiaomi is also doing some recycling jobs on the side by recycling 4,500 tons of e-waste last year and is committed to doing so for the next 4 years, aiming for around 38,000 tons of e-waste and using 5,000 tons of recycled materials.

Programs that bring benefits to its customer including Trade-In Program also helps instill value into products that have entered EoL while high durability standards mean that one would not need to replace as many parts as needed compared to cheap products.
