The Galaxy S5 is a much anticipated device – and it’s now available in Malaysia! The Galaxy S5 had just been launched alongside with the Galaxy Gear Fit and also the Galaxy Gear 2. Aiming at the 5 main themes that the Galaxy S5 is focused on – Fit, Style, Design, Fun and Speed – Samsung really amazed us by what it did.
Without further ado, here’s the specs of the Galaxy S5 specs for the Malaysian version.
- 5.1-inch Super AMOLED 1080p screen
- 2.5GHz quad-core processor
- 16MP rear-facing camera (UHD video recording @ 30FPS), 2MP front-facing camera
- WiFi 802.11ac support
- USB 3.0 (same as the Note 3)
- 2GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, microSD expandable up to 128GB
- Android 4.4.2 KitKat
- 2800mAh battery
- LTE Cat.4 (150/50Mbps)
The retail price of the Galaxy S5 is RM2,399 – a little hefty for a new high-end smartphone, but it does come with a lot more extra stuff that you can’t get elsewhere, like the Download Booster where the S5 combines LTE and WiFi connection together to get your downloads finished in no time. The Galaxy S5 is only available in black and white for now, whereas the blue and gold colour is to be brought to the Malaysian shores a little later.
There are a few accessories too, like the IP67-approved original Samsung flip magnetic cover case.
Keep in mind – Samsung advises that you only get Samsung original accessories so that the water and dust resistance is maintained!
The back of the phone is using a perforated back, which is not even faux leather. It does however feel a lot better in the end with the grip that it gives. The fingerprint sensor also works exceptionally well for the phone with the minimalist interface of the S5 that they call it as the “Clean & Vibrant UX” – more like just a reworked TouchWiz UI to give it a more minimalist look to it. Oh – the icons are all also rounded instead of the conventional square or rectangle.

Amazingly, Samsung included a small little heartbeat sensor below the camera, right beside the LED flash.
As for the Galaxy Gear 2 and Gear Fit, they’re both made with a heartbeat sensor built-in, with a bunch of other differences between the two.
- Galaxy Gear 2
- 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display (320×320) square-shaped display
- 1.0GHz dual-core processor
- Tizen OS
- 2MP camera with autofocus
- Heart rate sensor

- Running, walking, cycling and hiking modes
- Infrared remote capability
- Water and dust resistant
- 512MB RAM, 4GB internal memory (can be a music player)
- Retail price at RM899
- Galaxy Gear Fit
- 1.84-inch curved Super AMOLED display (432×128) oval-shaped screen
- Heart rate sensor
- Pedometer
- Notifications alert

Samsung also addressed an issue that was faced by the first ever Galaxy Gear – the strap. Samsung now made the strap to be exchangeable, with multiple colours to be chosen from and also with designer straps from some major fashion brands coming soon.
The Gear 2 is obviously more superior to the Gear Fit, but of course it doesn’t have the curved screen and comes with a lot of extra features. It is also a lot thinner than the first Galaxy Gear, and feels more comfortable to wear.
The Gear Fit however, I think is more stylish than the Gear 2, maybe it looks and shows time like the Black Dice GURU LED watch that I am always wearing. Due to the shape of the Gear Fit’s screen being shown in such an awkward orientation, it will most definitely take some getting used to.
As for now though, both the Gear 2 and Gear Fit is only compatible with a few devices.
The Gear 2 requires devices to have at least Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, 1.5GB RAM and also Bluetooth 4.0.
The Gear Fit hwoeer requires devices to be at least Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, 1GB RAM and also Bluetooth 4.0.
The compatibility list of both Gear 2 and Gear Fit can be checked here.
All the above-mentioned devices will be available in Malaysia starting from April 11th 2014. You can pre-order the new Samsung Galaxy S5 from DiGi, Celcom or Maxis for their and their exclusive plans, or you can also pre-order from the Samsung Mobile Brand shops starting now!
