Our planet have a natural radiation belt named The Van Allen radiation belt. The belt itself is a plasma that surrounds the earth and held in place by it’s own magnetic field. The altitude for the belt is around 1000 KM to 60 000 km above the surface.

Recently, NASA have unexpectedly discovered an additional radiation belt with their Van Allen Probes. The probes are designed to study the behavior of space influence. The unknown third radiation belt may pose a potential risk for our current satellites and probes inclduing manned space flights.
Nicky Fox, Van Allen Probes deputy project scientist at the Johns Hopkins University, said: “We thought we knew the radiation belts, but we don’t. The advances in technology and detection made by NASA in this mission already have had an almost immediate impact on basic science.”

NASA will be conducting a Google+ hangout Today soon on 2 AM till 3 AM, Malaysian time[GMT +8] to discuss and reveal further on the discovery.
