Google is still currently cooking the Android 15 OS update yet one of the old tales that never goes stale is buffing up security measures as well as giving controls and choices back to its users over time. And this time, they are tackling the issue of “juice jacking”.
Imagine this. Your power’s running low and you just so happen to run into a public charging station or a random wall plug with a “USB Cable” just lying beside it. Chances are you’ll just plug it in without giving it much thought.
But that’s the dangerous part because instead of just a regular ol’ USB port, the other side is most likely a mini-computer like a Pi or some sort and it can utilize Android calls or exploits to extract information from your device, without you knowing.
Hence the term “juice jacking” because they are “hijacking” your phone while you’re “juicing up” your phone. And this thing has been running around for years, even.
Therefore, the Lockdown Mode in Android 15 will incorporate “anti-juice jacking” preventions to ward them off from installing payloads, executing commands, or remotely controlling your device.
Despite the real and practical reason why Android devices are being “juice-jacked” was from enabling USB Debugging allowing ADB to mess around, this has to be explicitly enabled in the Developer Options which most people wouldn’t even know or touched on (unless some prior malicious app already instructed them to enable it, but I digress).
There’s also one line of guard being “USB Transfer File” enabled as the default option so if you’re scared of it, you better select “Charging Only” from now on.
In any case, this is just another way of seeing Google making clear moves and efforts in enhancing Lockdown Mode by covering more areas as time goes on.
Also just a quick PSA – If you really want to rely on public charging stations, at least carry your own USB cable without data pins. That way, only the power pins are connected and nothing will be siphoned from you.
