The MWC Shanghai 2024 tech show is currently still going on but HONOR’s had a bit of an early rotation so they’ve revealed some new use of AI technology that may (or may not) trickle down into its smartphones and whatnot.

HONOR AI Deepfake Detection

First off, there’s the AI Deepfake Detection that aims to reduce the likelihood of malicious individuals using the face swap feature to pose as someone and scam people with it.

The AI algorithm which is trained on a large number of related content, checks or detects patterns of inconsistencies such as eye contact, lighting, and image clarity. Upon detecting a potential scam, it will immediately alert the user to the point where the notification should pop up within 3 seconds of the video getting played or called.

The scammer probably only has time to say hello and be on their way.

HONOR AI Defocus Eye Protection

Aside from battling scammers, HONOR also takes AI and puts it into the eye care sector with the application being “defocusing” unwanted parts to elevate focus on the relevant parts.

Through this, there will be less “information” captured by our eyes which will lead to less overall stress and according to internal data, it can reduce transient myopia by 13 degrees after 25 minutes of reading, with some users experiencing up to a 75-degree reduction.

Is this the solution to preventing nearsightedness? I don’t think so but I’d welcome the company to refine this tech and prove me wrong in the future because I’m all for less kids forced to wear glasses at an age they weren’t supposed to.

Both of these solutions are touted to be “on-device” because that’s what they are aiming for, at least from the theme of their presentation as they believe on-device AI will be more efficient and effective in providing personalized experience over cloud-based ones.
