Google’s own Pixel smartphones from 2021 onwards house its own Tensor SoC but certain designs and details aren’t really made in-house that is going to change with the Tensor G5 slated for the Pixel 10 series of devices as sources confirm Tape-Out phase initiation for the chip.
Following the same report from Taiwanese media ‘工商時報’, the development of Tensor G5 has shifted from “stagnant” to “progressing steadily” ever since Google switched manufacturing from Samsung to TSMC.
The power of TSMC’s 3nm process is no slouch and it basically helped Google to come out with its first self-designed smartphone SoC. As for why they are handled by Samsung in the first place is because previous Tensor designs were basically modded Exynos chips.
Therefore, by switching to a full in-house design philosophy, not only do they get to pick their fabrication partner without holdback but also Google will be able to get more “funky and innovative” ideas in terms of how they integrate its hardware and software stack together.
Despite Samsung’s Exynos being kind of “underwhelming” in terms of market and general consumer recognition, I guess Google did learn the process of chip designing from them for about 3 to 4 years and now it is time to show off their skills.
With AI finally finished brewing the storm and blasting the IT sector in full force, everyone needs to apply cutting-edge AI technologies fast enough to ride the hype train and capitalize on the opportunity, and Google is no different from others.
But aside from bringing the challenge towards Apple and its iPhone, I wonder if there are any tricks up their sleeves to make the Pixel 10 stand out enough against other Android smartphone brands.
