Some of you might be old enough to witness the infamous U.S. video game crash of 1983 caused by the over-expectation of the market as well as the absolute potato state of the E.T. game by Atari. Well, that name has resurfaced in 2025 and it is about a portable console, but with a twist.

Partnering up with retro gaming company My Arcade, this new system is named the Gamestation Go and it is slated for announcement during next week’s CES 2025 expo. The design is kind of special, adopting from the base look of the “current latest” model Gamestation Portable, by placing a trackball below the D-Pad. Since I’m not that old enough to enjoy and appreciate trackball gaming, perhaps it’ll be fun to explore the potential library of games that supports it.

On the other hand, the face and back buttons are sort of a “mixed bag” – Xbox’s ABXY plus Playstation’s L1/L2/R1/R2 as they called it. And look at that, a NumPad below the face buttons? Are we really flashing back to the era when we had MAME emulators accepting keyboard inputs as joypad buttons?

Luckily, the weirdness kind of ends there as the Start, Select, Settings, and Credit buttons occupy the top corners of the screen followed by the suite of a microSD slot, HDMI-out port in case you want to hook up a TV (which is also present in the Gamestation Portable by the way), USB-C for power, 3.5mm audio jack, volume rocker, and the Home button for quitting games.

The teaser also showcased the shine-through nature of the back buttons as well as a circle accent around the joystick for some “gaming elements”.

The amount of available information kind of stops there as it will be reserved for its official debut during the big event but judging from its commitment to delivering a diverse range of gaming experiences through the likes of trackball and numpad, it should have quite the power to emulate a lot of stuff and could be priced a bit higher than the $149 of Gamestation Portable but I guess we’ll see.
