We’re back again with another SSD review – and this time, it’s from Orico. This is an affordable high-speed PCIe Gen 4 SSD that boasts 7000MB/s read speed! For just $50 for 512GB and up to $240 for the 4TB variant, how does the Orico O7000 SSD perform?

Packaging and accessories

Okay, let’s start with the packaging. Although simple, it does come with a lot of great accessories. The box just states a few details of the SSD, and the back has a few more details which I honestly think are not really that useful.

Now, opening the box – we have all the things needed to install the SSD on whatever device you have. It includes an SSD screw, a screwdriver, and also a rather elaborate heatsink for the Orico O7000.

It comes with the back and front piece of the heatsink, alongside two pieces of thermal pads. That means we can sandwich the SSD in thermal pads for much better heat dissipation. Though if you are installing the SSD to a motherboard with a heatsink already, then just use your motherboard’s heatsink.

Closer look at the SSD

The SSD itself is rather simple in terms of the build. Only one side of the SSD has NAND chips. The NAND chips are as shown on the screen – and I can’t find anything online at all. According to another review from TechPowerUP though, their unit of the Orico O7000 2TB has a different NAND chip.

This Orico O7000 is using the Maxio MAP1602A-F3C controller, and alas – this is a DRAMless SSD. This will affect the performance but we’ll talk about this later.

Performance test

So, what’s the performance then? Well, actually very good. In CrystalDiskMark, it does reach 7000MB/s read speed and beyond. In both ATTO and AS SSD benchmarks are also great.

Even the temperature is great. I just mounted it on the motherboard and used the heatsink – and the Orico O7000 stays cool throughout all of our synthetic tests. Do take note that synthetic tests are unrealistic workloads placed on the SSD. Realistically speaking, when we’re using the SSD, it wouldn’t reach this level of workloads.

Now, while the SSD looks great throughout these benchmarks – there is one big flaw – and that is the Orico O7000 SSD being DRAMless. Without a DRAM, that means the cache will be choked, and that will affect its linear write performance.

We used the AIDA64 linear write disk benchmark and this graph is… well, honestly to be expected for a DRAMless SSD. Once the SSD is filled up, the write speed drops drastically and does not recover until the test ends – which is why it took over 3.5 hours to finish this test.

But again – do take note that this is a synthetic test. In real life usage, it’s rare to encounter this kind of behavior in any sort of realistic usage behavior. So, don’t worry about it too much unless you are continuously writing lots of files to the Orico O7000 SSD.

What’s the Orico O7000 suitable for?

The Orico O7000 SSD is actually very suitable for all sorts of usages, ranging from using it as a boot drive to a game drive, or even an external SSD for superbly fast file transfers.

Orico themselves have the option to buy the O7000 SSD bundled with a USB 4 40Gb/s external SSD too – and this is an actually good SSD enclosure. I am using one for the past 2 years already – and it performs really well. Paired with the Orico O7000, it will be an enticing offer. Plus, if we choose to upgrade the SSD to something of a higher capacity in the future, then we can just open up the enclosure and do so. Easy.

Should you buy the Orico O7000 SSD?

And so – finally, the price. Is the Orico O7000 worth your money? It’s actually very good in terms of the performance but in terms of value, we’ll have to calculate the cost/gigabyte using the price on Amazon US.

  • 512GB – $0.09765625
  • 1TB – $0.07
  • 2TB – $0.065
  • 4TB – $0.06

The cost/gigabyte is actually really good too. It gets better as the capacity increases – but please do not purposely buy the 4TB variant if you don’t need that much capacity. Just know that even if you do get the 4TB variant, you’re getting a good deal – even better deal, actually.

That’s all that we have to share with you in today’s video – the Orico O7000 SSD is an amazing SSD that you can use practically for everything. And yet it’s also affordable.
