Windows-powered handheld gaming PC is 2024’s highlight for portable gaming that seemingly replaced Android-based devices.
But they are striking back, as Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon G series processors are going to bring back the glory of Android gaming handhelds.
Unveiled at GDC 2025, the new SKUs we got here are the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3/ G2 Gen 2/ G1 Gen 2, listed from the most powerful to the least. Despite all of them rocking 8x Kryo CPUs, the presence of Prime cores alongside the number of the Performance and Efficiency cores makes up the main difference.
They also have to scale GPU tiering with the best one, the A32 supporting ray tracing as well as UE5’s Lumen lighting system. Connectivity-wise, the top 2 SKUs can do WiFi 7 while the budget G1 Gen 2 stays in the Wi-Fi 5 segment.
After factoring in the display output preference, one can easily assume that the G1 Gen 2 is for budget devices, while the G2 Gen 2 is going for the mainstream and “baseline” tier, while the G3 Gen 3 aims for more performance that can either do smoother/higher frame rates or capable of running games with higher resource demands.
According to Qualcomm, they have also hit up OEM partners to churn out systems with these Snapdragon G series chips, particularly AYANEO, ONEXSUGAR, and Retroid Pocket will soon be selling their own offerings.
With these, they aim to provide gamers the ability to play via cloud, console, Android, or PC games while on the go.
However, it is still currently unknown whether Android OS is a must for these devices or whether alternatives like Windows on Arm / SteamOS are compatible with them.
