The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus got a very huge success that had never been experienced before – 10 million units sold over the weekend. That’s a feat that no other companies can pull off. It might be due to the fact that Apple is finally enlarging the screen to be offered in two flavours, 4.7-inch and another 5.5-inch version.
So here’s where things go bad. Supposedly, the iPhone’s build quality is top-notch. However not in this case. It seems like Apple pushed out a large device without much consideration on how the build quality will be.
Over the night, there had been a lot of reports that the iPhone 6 Plus getting bent ridiculously by just putting the phone into your pant’s pocket, even on the front pockets, which isn’t bent as much as the pockets at the back. Many people have verified this and yes, there are many people out there who found their brand-new iPhone 6 Plus already bent.
This isn’t the first time that Apple’s iPhone has suffered such a disaster, as the previous iterations of iPhone are also bent and yet again at the same area – the SIM card tray area, which is presumably the weakest point.
Here Unbox Therapy testing how durable the iPhone 6 Plus is, by doing a bend test. Also, in the second video, it is noted that while attempting to bend the iPhone 6 Plus back to the original flatness will cause the screen to crack, making it unusable. Good job Apple!
Similarly, Unbox Therapy did another video where they bend another 5.5-inch screen device with the similar form factor – the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
Surprising results! I’ve always been saying that the build quality of Samsung devices are definitely cheap and mostly ugly (especially the fake plastic leather texture) but they proved their point – durability by putting the phone in your pocket shows absolutely no significant permanent bends. It does flex quite greatly while attempting to bend with extreme force, but it went back to its original shape instantly when there is no force applied.
Who’s to blame? Apple or the user? I have absolutely no idea. Over at MacRumors where I first found out about this, the forum users were infuriated by the fact that an iPhone can bend like this. Then, users started to blame skinny jeans as they can’t fit such a big phone into their pockets without bending. It’s ridiculous – yet funny!
Will Apple recall all the iPhone 6 Plus to fix this problem? I don’t think so, they’ll probably just say “you’re putting it wrong” or “you’re sitting it wrong” or something along that line.
Stay tuned for further news on this!
UPDATE : Unbox Therapy has now posted the final and last video in this trilogy – this time with the iPhone 6, HTC One M8, the new Moto X, and the Nokia Lumia 1020
I’m not surprised by the fact that iPhone 6 can’t bend as much as the iPhone 6 Plus. The One M8 is also expected not to bend, as the construction of it has the shape of a saddle, and it’s a phenomenon exploited by building constructions. The Moto X was a total surprise, as Motorola’s latest and greatest is actually tough as rock, and the Lumia 1020 is well… a Nokia!
