According to Phil Rogers of AMD with 20 years of 3D expertise, he says that Holodeck technology will probably be available by the next 10 to 15 years. For those who are not similar with the Sci-Fi’s famous Holodeck from Star Trek, this might give you some idea of the Holodeck.
Basically, it is a room that can run simulations of objects, complex devices and even simulate an individual’s behavior. The Holodeck in Star Trek works by projecting photonic energy in which you can feel and touch them. It is just like a hologram that you can touch.
With this technology, we can simulate anything we could have ever imagined. Even video game can come to life so that we can join in with 100% real experience of the adventure. Other scientific simulations can benefit mankind extraordinarily such as running a complicated medical procedure before doing it to a real person. The possibilities are endless!
A real Holodeck however, will require a video technology that is 100% realistic and wraps around you that you won’t be able to tell if it’s real or not. Visual perspective is also a technical challenge by Rogers says that it can be achieved by joining multiple video feeds seamlessly.
For the touch sensation, current technology uses air jets. Computer power however is not ready yet as it would require a huge factory sized computer farm to power that kind of graphics and sound.
Rogers says that the best ideas come from the open source community. Let’s hope that we can develop our own simulations in the next 15 years.
