Lenovo is expanding again! Since their acquisition of IBM’s PC inductry back in the year 2005, Lenovo has once again sought out for IBM – this time being their x86 server business. This acquisition however costs Lenovo USD $2.1 billion (RM6.88 billion) in total, with approximately USD $1.8 billion (RM5.9 billion) to be paid in cold hard cash at closing, and the approximate remain of USD $280 million (RM917.42 million) to be paid with Lenovo’s stock based on closing price as of September 26th 2014.
Lenovo has acquired the System x, BladeCenter, and Flex System blade servers and switches, x86-based Flex integrated systems, NeXt Scale and iDataPlex servers alongside with the associated software, blade networking and maintenance operation.
Lenovo promises to have a smooth integration and transition throughout the entire acquisition so that there aren’t any screwups from their side of things. Definitely another point to note on how large Lenovo has become is that they will be in the top three smart devices manufacturer in the world for PCs, tablets, and smartphones, after the completion of acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google.
Fret not, as Lenovo and IBM established an alliance where Lenovo will be an OEM to IBM and resell products from IBM’s industry-leading storage and software portfolio, including IBM’s entry and midrange Storwize storage product family, Linear Tape Open (LTO) prodcuts, IBM Flash Storage Arrays and elements of IBM’s system software portfolio, including Smart Cloud, General Parallel File System and Platform Computing solutions.
Additionally, Lenovo will continue to follow IBM x86’s product roadmap, including Flex and x86-based PureFlex integrated systems.
We’ve seen what Lenovo has done with IBM’s PC industry since its acquisition, and now we’re excited to see what Lenovo can bring to the IBM x86’s server business. Hopefully they’re able to recreate its glory days and repeat the success of IBM’s PC industry too.
